Repentance = Seeking God’s Mercy

first aidIt didn’t take long before I heard the groans of my students as I displayed, in bold, big letters, the word, “repent”. They were then asked to list other words that came to mind. Sin, embarrassment, bishop, confess, pain, mistake, unworthy, discouragement, hell, hopelessness were among the words most listed. There were a few who listed Atonement, Christ, joy, and change, but the overwhelmingly, most-picked words were negative and their comments certainly reflected that my students believed repenting was no fun. Age adjustments, phone calls and answered prayers

Anyone who follows me on Twitter (@LDSTroy) or my blog knows that I love to tweet during General Conference (#LDSConf). I admit, with some nerdy embarrassment, that I have been a part of the #TwitterStake since its beginning. Not only is it a way for me to take notes but I get to see everyone else’s notes. There are more “notes” than anyone could ever read but at the very least, it keeps me awake and alert through all of conference.

So when Conference started and President Thomas S. Monson offered his opening remarks, I was listening and tweeting – for a few seconds. When his comments switched to missionary work and the age adjustment for both young men (18) and young women (19), I was stunned.

Close to the height of His popularity, Jesus delivered the Sermon on the Mount, which included the Beatitudes.  It is perhaps the most read of Jesus’ teachings and introducing something more than what the Law of Moses had become.  It moved the focus from things we do – our behavior, to the feelings and motives we have.  If we have correct motives, if we develop the attributes of Christ, our Christian acts will follow – a by-product of who we have become. A year ago today. A photo essay about the Holy Lands.

A year ago this and next week, Jill and I, along with her parents, experienced the trip of a life time. A number of my posts have recounted the experiences we had in the Holy Lands. In fact, one was even published in the Church News and expressed the sentiment that you don’t have to go to the Holy Lands to experience deep spiritual feelings. One can walk where Jesus walked right here in holy temples. One can come to know Jesus is the son of God right where one stands.

I have been impressed lately with the importance of the resurrection of Jesus Christ. I don’t know that anyone can overstate the impact and significance – both globally and individually – of the literal resurrection of the Lord. In this secular day when “science” is king and the only way to know anything is through the scientific method, belief in the actual resurrection of Jesus is key and needs to be boldly articulated more often. Funerals: The Most Important Meetings We Will Ever Attend

Like people, wards (local LDS congregations) in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have their own personalities. Though unmistakably from the same family, very similar in structure and almost identical in theology, wards, like families, are very unique and distinctive.  In 2002, the ward in which my family lived was a fun, energetic ward despite the reality that our ward was aging. We had widows, widowers and older married couples who added stability, wisdom and a nurturing spirit. I was serving as the bishop and having these “tried and true” souls upon whom I could trust and depend, was an extreme blessing to a very inexperienced bishop. Read more of this post

The Sermon on the Mount and The Book of Mormon

One of the points of theology that set members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) apart from the rest of the Christian world is our belief in The Book of Mormon – Another Testament of Jesus Christ.  In fact, it is for that belief we are called, “Mormons”.
